AddedAsked where she got the scars all over her body, Gulnaz replied that everyone in her family beat her. "My uncle kicked me on the head. I got this scar because my mother struck my head with a mop. It was only once when she felt guilty after beating me up, while in the other cases she said that this was the sort of stuff to give me. I got another scar when my grandmother stabbed me in the head in a fit of temper. Two years ago, in December, my mother pushed me into the stream of cold water. She locked me up in the toilet for two days and traveled to the region. One day in winter, my mother and father kicked me out from home in home clothing. Police saw me with my feet swollen and frostbitten. I looked like a tramp. The policemen took me to Khatai District Police Department and when I told them what had happened they decided to strip my mother of her parental rights, but my father came to the police station and kicked up a row. My father gave 2,000 manats to someone there and the case was hushed up."

Azerbaijan's 15-year-old students ranked last but one on the level of readers' literacy.
